AUTOMATIC STATOR STACK WELDING MACHINE

MSSW/XL-90

DESCRIPTION

The Model MSSW/XL-90 is a heavy duty, high production, in-line type machine specifically designed to assemble stator stacks using primarily the T.I.G. type welding method for securing the lamination packs.  All functions, as described in the following sequence of operation, are fully automatic and are pneumatically controlled with the exception of the torch carrier which is pneumatically operated but hydraulically controlled.  The sequence of operation for the MSSW/XL-90A (“A” denotes fully automatic)

SEQUENCE OF OPERATION
  1. A stack of laminations is selected to a tolerance of plus or minus one (1) lamination from a main supply stringer and deposited into the transfer chute at Station #1.  At this point, transfer tooling attached to the transfer walking beam moves into position within the selected stack and moves it to Station #2.

  2. Half stack rotation option takes place at this station, if selected.

  3. Station #3 is the measure station.  Here the selected stack is gauged.  If the “Add A Lamination” option is selected, one (1), two (2), or three (3) laminations can be selected and placed at this station to bring the stack within tolerance.  Once the stack has been determined to be within tolerance or if it is beyond correctable dimensions, it is transferred to Station #4.

  4. This is a reject station for non-correctable stacks.  Good stacks simply passed through this station with no action taken.

  5. Station #5 is the weld station.  Here the stator stack is compressed.  A keyed arbor is inserted to properly align the pole tips and the stack is welded using T.I.G. type torches which traverse the length of the stator stack at a precise speed.  Normally either two (2) or four (4) welding torches are used.  Upon completion of the welding cycle, the torches retract, the stator stack is unclamped and the finished part is transferred out the unload track.
